Barium is a colloidal solution (separates from water). So when the large intestine reabsorbs water…both individuals will have white stool for a couple days and possible constipation unless they continually drink fluids.

Barium is a contrast agent used in fluroscopy to visualize internal structures. It’s only toxic if there’s a perforation in the lining of the structure (pneumonitis if aspirated or peritonitis if leaked). They did a UGI or Upper Gastric Intestine. The person is supposed to be NPO (nothing per oral) 8 hrs prior to ingestion of Barium.If the person had a perforation or was pre/post-surgery they’d use water-iodinated contrast since it can be absorbed by the kidneys & excreted out as urine.
