I made this cake in a 7L pressure cooker. It’s a old one & i only use for steaming and baking cakes. Preheat the cooker on medium to high flame for 3 min. without water, put the round stand like a small cooling rack then put the cake pan
(preferably aluminium pan), cover with the lid without the whistle & let it cook on high flame for 2 minutes than reduce the flame and cook for 40 minutes.
Note: If baking pan comes into direct contact of the base of cooker, it can harm ( overbake ) the cake.

Make cake batter & grease a deep enough pan that easily fits into your cooker or use wax paper or plane paper in the bottom & sides of the pan & grease it..Pour batter into the pan & put it on an inch think stand at the bottom of the cooker..make sure to take out the whistle & put 2 cups of water at the bottom of the cooker for steam cook..it takes 30-40 mins and it tastes almost same..

shankarabharanam – why look in the malls – any regular grocery store Ralphs, Safeway, Lucky etc. will most certainly carry since baking is common in the U.S. In India, you’ll find in specialty stores that carry cake ingredients.

- You can try not using condensed milk and butter.( use plain oil 1 cup instead – you can try to cut it in half if you feel like and later moisten the cake) instead use milk powder with minimum water. For sweetness substitute it with a couple of spoons of splenda or use dark brown sugar (healthier) in place of white sugar. and Voila you have your cake. I sometimes use a little of saffron in it which gives it that liquorish taste

Baking powder and soda both contain sodium bicarbonate, however, the powder has added cream of tartar and corn starch. Please see our Tip Tuesday video “Baking Soda vs Baking Powder” for details.

I couldn’t get baking powder. When i tried in malls, the guy in the counter said that both baking soda and powder are same and if you are using it for baking either one is fine. Is there any substitute to baking powder

This cake is not meant to be as spongy as regular white cake…it is a little denser. In our opinion, we’d skip the mixer part.
