Watermelon’s Tasty Little Secret

I always know that summer is approaching when I buy my first watermelon.   We almost always have a bowl of watermelon cut up in our fridge throughout the entire summer.  It is definitely one of the most refreshing foods on a hot day.

Watermelon is packed full of nutrients and phytochemicals, but there is one nutrition fact most people aren’t aware of:  Watermelon has more lycopene than tomatoes!  According to the USDA, Watermelon has about 40% more lycopene than raw tomatoes which are known for their high lycopene levels.  Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to possibly help fight heart disease and prevent several types of cancer.
